Creating Short Plays For The Classroom

By Tammie Caldwell

If you need to make your students feel alive while they are studying, then form them in groups and allow them to become a part of mini plays. Be reminded that these kids can get bored that easily. They may not say it since it is clear that you are in the position of authority but then, you ought to be more sensitive as a person.

First of all, you will have to make a decision on which materials will bring fun to your classes. If you are teaching a novel, then you already have your answer for your short plays for the classroom. You can stick with the plot so that you will be able to give out some points that are important to the learning of your students.

Second, if you are following a certain timeline, then you will have to shorten the plot that you will be giving out to everybody. Now, if you want to bring out their competitive side, then you can hand out the same piece and allow them to interpret it their own way. If not, then you are free to follow your own style.

Third, you will have to serve as the light of these kids at the end of their tunnel. Take note that they are not born actors. They may even lack the facial expressions in depicting their roles but then, your only role in here is to bring them out of their comfort zone. Make them see that their life will be so much easier if they are confident.

You must be lenient with the practice period. Be reminded that you have grouped students with different personalities. If you will not offer them the time to adjust one to one another, then they will never get to see the same terms. So, promote teamwork to the best of your abilities for these kids to be grateful to you later on.

You have to provide them with the freedom to modify their lines. Remember that you are trying to bring out the creativity of these people. If you would not let them improvise when they are encountering a memory block, then you would not be enhancing their skills in that aspect.

You must make your students know the lesson behind the stories that they will be playing. If you will not put them in that mode, then they will think that they can get through this like it is just a game. You really have to put your foot down in here.

When it comes to the evaluation that you need to do, you will have to put yourself in the shoes of each one of your students. If you will perform that, then you will see that they have really exerted an effort in their roles. They have tried their best and that is what is essential.

Overall, you should practice patience in here. Your students may not get everything in the first round but then, you will have to provide them with chances. If not, then you are not an educator at all.
