Enjoying The Reading Of Supernatural Thriller Books

By Donna Gibson

Whether you like to read, prefer to write, or maybe both, it is important to know the characteristics that different genres have so you will know what to look forward to. Loyal followers and writers of supernatural thriller books know that the genre combines a couple of genres to characterize them.

The thriller portion of these books are defined by the feelings of suspense and excitement they instill in the reader. They also elicit feelings of anxiety. The supernatural portion uses plot devices to cause belief in the contradictions of the natural world and expectations about it. It is speculative, and demands a certain amount of creativity to be able to do suspend belief in the natural world.

Since early times, storytelling has provided a means of gaining attention for the storyteller and an interest in an amazing tale to those listening. These tales serve to help them understand the world beyond their own senses. The thriller genre has helped resolve the fears and provide excitement in discovering things strange and unexplained. This us true whether it is oral or written in delivery method.

The conflict of two main characters, one with a special power, is typical of this genre. Earlier tales are great examples, with a main character battling a lesser character with special powers. The heroic character always comes out as the leader. Though only told orally, this type tale with the thriller traits keep the listener interested in the saga to the very end.

Early tales written for enjoyment involved the supernatural as well. This propelled the story forward for its readers. It was a case of man against the supernatural, with man winning most of the time. Ghosts, witches, and curses kept the reader on the edge of their seat while reading, becoming motivated to follow the character and gain insight into their actions.

Gothic tales were a natural progression from the early stories. This resulted in tales such as that Frankenstein, as well as the Henry James and Edgar Allen Poe tales. This often left the reader to wonder if the character was insane, or if they were under the power of a dark force. This often led to the fear of it happening to them. This made the tale more appealing.

Tales of shape-shifters and other unnatural characters naturally evolved from the tales of this genre. These characters had a strong visual image, making them great for adapting for television and the movies. Though the viewer is asked to suspend their disbelief about these things, directors know how to handle this and still tell a believable tale. They make use of the viewers ability to suspend disbelief and get a thrill and excitement.

Though the number of authors entering this genre is growing, they can't do away with the old tales, many of which are still enjoyed today. Many writers follow the advice to study the older authors to refine the technique of writing this kind of tale. It is a very enjoyable genre, but it is very difficult to write. However, authors seem to continue to take the reader into a strange world while overcoming their disbelief.
