New American Novelist Ideology And Imagination

By Tanisha Berg

When it comes to authors, there are as many different stories as there are of the people who created them. These stories can often be written in a variety of styles. When it comes to the new American Novelist, there is often a great deal of truth blended within the fictional aspects of the story line.

These new novelists range in story telling and subject style. Some write in first person, others in third, all have a story to tell. Whether witches and wizards, or vampires and werewolves, those with a creative mind can often publish interesting, informative and sometimes scary novels and novellas. One of the most interesting areas with relation to new novelists are those of children and teenagers.

Some years ago, Granta dedicated an issue related to new fiction based on the 20 writers believed to be the best young novelists at the time. At that time, some of these writers were Jeffrey Eugenides, Edwidge Danticat and Sherman Alexie. All of which were under the age of thirty-five at the time of publication.

As truth is often the basis for a lot of fiction, it is important that writers use caution when transcribing facts into fictional data. It is also important to develop the characters in a way that does not provide for the true identity of the individual being used in the story. Remember, the individuals a writer uses in a story are often close enough to the writer that one feels comfortable doing so. That is, at least up until the individual recognizes a negative trait in the story which the writer could have only took from that person.

With that being said, for fiction to be fiction and not non-fiction, there has to be a strong element of the imagination. Names must be changed to protect the innocent, and the story needs to be slanted to a degree in which it can not be easily recognized. All in all, when writing fiction, the bulk of the story should rest on the imagination with characters developed on individuals in real life but with differing backgrounds and story lines from reality.

If people one uses for characters in a story are not disguised properly, individuals can often take notice with some of the writings. It is often hard for individuals reading real stories about oneself, even in a fictional novel not to get upset. To avoid this, it is always good to incorporate both positive and negative behaviors in all characters.

New authors may want to look into publishing a book in hard, soft, and e-book versions. A number of online book publishers now offer this service. While it is often up to the writer to determine this cost, it is often good to keep it as low and as close to the original cost as possible.

In this day and age, with the internet and advanced printing technologies, there are several ways to publish a novel or novella. One is through the traditional form of submitting a query letter with a subject and outline to a publisher for acceptance. Another, is to use an online publication system in which the writer only pays for the e-books, or hard copies sold over the internet. The last, is to self-publish and distribute the book oneself at local bookstores, gift shops and libraries.
