When it comes to editing and writing opportunities, there are a number of areas in which those interested in these jobs can work. One of which is that of a Freelance Content Writer or Editor. In most cases, these individuals work on a freelance basis as an Independent Contractor.

Some areas of expertise in which these individuals perform duties include Web Development, Medical Transcription, Legal, Enterprise, Energy, Education, Oil and Gas, Data Entry, Customer Support, Community Organization and Administrative Support. Others may work as technical editors and writers for a number of different consulting or technical firms.

Regardless of the type of environment a writer is working in, there are several skills which are essential to all areas. For example, having an in-depth knowledge of the subject matter, or the ability to research the information is generally required across the board. Whereas, some positions may require the use of SEO keywords while others may not.

While in high demand, only those having the skill set necessary are going to get the best jobs. For example, when it comes to advertising, there is no shortage of work for contract content copywriters and writers. However, those wishing to apply need to know how to present ideas and information in a specific way in order to attract readers.

Individuals working in these positions are generally creative professionals with a basic understanding of search engines and computer technology. While this is the case, there is often no degree required when it comes to filling these positions. Regardless, individuals whom can use terminology relevant to various clients, consumers, customers and topics often make the best writers. Whether using keywords, or other relevant data, individuals whom can write articles and documents in a way that is interesting and informative are often successful.

While there are specific skills required in many positions, most require a strong sense of the English language, proper use of grammar and excellent spelling. In addition, knowledge of a number of different tones, writing styles and having the ability to follow guidelines are important. One of the most important being the ability work alone without supervision or interruption while completing work on time.

Being able to understand the desires of a client when it comes to formatting and terminology is essential to completing a project. In many cases, there may be deadlines associated with submitting materials. When this is the case, it is imperative that the individual meet any deadlines on time. If there is an issue, it is imperative that the individual contact the hiring manager and request an extension as soon as possible so that the client can inform others if and when necessary.

Having hands-on experience with a number of different software packages and applications is often a plus for those applying for these positions. For, while some may allow one to use any package with which one is familiar, others may require a specific program or programs be used as part of the project. As such, it is imperative that one have in-depth knowledge and experience with those packages or applications before agreeing to work on the project.
