Thriller Novels From The Page To The Silver Screen

By Stephen Lee

Few people have the luxury of being able to settle down with a good book for a few hours. Life is so busy that more often than not people find their entertainment from the television or streaming services. Thankfully there is still lots of great books available and many thriller novels find their way onto our screens as movie productions.

Many of the best authors in this genre have their work adapted for the cinema. The format lends itself to the silver screen with tension, a hero and often a love interest as well. While the film makers often do justice do the book and produce an entertaining film, there are many instances where the book is still better.

Reading a novel allows you to make up your own mind about the main characters. When written well a novel can perfectly sum up a summers day or the hard angles of the cliffs and your mind conjures the image. If there is a rotting corpse the sight and smell can be described and there is no need for a special effects department and the actor to say how horrible the smell is.

The heroes and heroines who track down the bad guys or foil the plot to take over the world can become as familiar as your own family. A series of books featuring the same protagonists can give you an insight into their psyche and you start to understand their often flawed characters. You can picture them from the description the author gives; rugged, lean, haunted eyes or a sultry temptress.

It can be disappointing to an avid reader when the character they know to be six feet tall and blonde is played by a short actor with dark hair. The casting director might know that actor will draw a crowd, but it leaves the reader wondering why they did not stay true to the books. There are few cases where changing the character or plot makes the film better than the book.

Bringing a great book to the movie screen can bring a new audience to the original author. Enjoying a film can lead people to seek out previous or following works. Bringing people to books is excellent however it happens. It is well known that reading can improve spelling, literacy and is a great way to learn about other countries and cultures.

The internet is a great way to find new authors and old favorites. There are a number of online bookstores and you can read reviews from other readers before choosing to buy. Often the sites will track what you are buying and suggest new books that you will like in the same genre.

If you prefer gadgets to paper, then there is a wealth of apps for all electronic devices to download and read books. Some sites allow free downloads of the first few chapters or the whole novel in the case of new authors. Nearly all the classic books have also been republished as e-books and as they are no longer copyrighted they are normally free. The thriller genre has been around for centuries and these classics are still a really good read.
