How To Improve Race Relations

By Virginia King

It is almost impossible to discuss race with evoking negative emotions. This storm has led to broken relationships and inability to work in some circumstances. Violence and conflicts in different parts of the world have also been attributed to poor race relations. This leaves every individual and organization with the responsibility of building stronger bridges between different races. Here are ways to boost these relationships.

Engage people in conversations on how races can co-exist without violence. Such conversations can decently happen in all corners of the world and create change. When people who are offended voice their concerns, offenders will better understand the situation. It gives them a sober moment to reflect on their actions and words in order to change. The aim of conversations is to raise awareness and forestall future offensive remarks or actions.

Jokes or actions that mock or make fun of other races should not be entertained. This includes stereotypes that are negative and only fuel conflicts between races. People must be made aware of the fact that words and actions that put other people down will not be tolerated. Do not laugh at such remarks or jokes. The person pushing the jokes will pick cue from you and stop the offensive approach.

Act introspectively about racism especially at personal level. The reflections should be on words you utter and the actions you take in different circumstances. These words are the sparks that light the fire of racism. Think of how offensive it would feel if such words were directed towards you. This is enough reason to keep the words out of your mouth. When you think of tragedies that result from racist jives, you will think twice before uttering a word or acting in a particular way.

Be critical of the things you view, read and listen to. If the materials you encounter promote racism, it is time to abandon them. Do not watch or support events that are racist in principle. Avoid even debates and comments that make the situation worse. Do not even support people whose activities or engagements are considered racist. This message must be sent loud and clear so that the perpetrators can understand the message.

Build a diverse community around you. Workers and management at all levels should represent all races. The message sent in such a case is that race does not determine the ability of a person to deliver. A diverse work environment gives confidence to all races that their contributions are cherished and that anyone can work in any environment.

Persons who promote racism must be punished severely. The policy on racism must be included in company regulations and policies. Each worker and partner must be made aware that your organization does not entertain racism. Punishment should be meted on those caught perpetuating the vice. There is also need to protect majority of the people from reverse discrimination from minority. Racism will cease to be an issue if everyone is treated as an equal.

Each situation should be treated individually. Be candid in your discussions about racism and handle issues when they are still fresh on the minds of people. The campaign to improve relationships between races must be spearheaded by management. Seek to be genuine and candid in your campaign and you will enjoy the fruits.
