By Vicki Diaz

Sci fi books for kids are usually very entertaining and if your child starts reading them from early on, it is probably the beginning of a lifelong interest. However, many people do not appreciate just how valuable these stories are educationally. They promote analytical thinking and the application of

As the world becomes increasingly competitive parents try to give their children all they can in order to have an advantage in the future jobs market. People understand that an education is the best advantage a child can have in order to get a head start. Some parents begin hot housing their offspring even before they are born in order to stimulate their intellect so that they can succeed in future,

It has been long recognised that if you encourage children to read it is a good strategy to ensure success educationally in future. Their ability to pass exams rests on the competence with they are able to handle reading. You can only interpret written questions and provide comprehensive answers to them if you are able to read well.

Reading any material is useful but science fiction material offers advantages that are less available in other forms of literature. The books often articulate complex scientific concepts that the children have to comprehend in order to understand the powers, predicaments and environments of the heroes they are reading about.

Among the favourite science fiction stories are those that are set beyond the limits of the atmosphere of earth. They take place in outer space. This idea offers so many learning opportunities in itself. For example the theory of gravity may well be dealt with in the stories. Also machines such as space ships are described in great detail and children are afforded an opportunity to explore technological capabilities of future vehicles.

Other books may look at time travel concepts and ideas. They explore the difficulties and possibilities of breaking through fixed time dimensions in order to go back in the past or ahead into the future. HG Wells with his time machine story was one of the first to popularise such a concept. It has been treated over and over again, such as in the story made into a movie starring Michael Fox.

Those books and stories that are set in the near future provide some very exceptional opportunities for children to thinking about how their own future may look like as they enter adulthood. Many look at how human liberty may be curtailed in favour of an all powerful state that is able to monitor the every move of the individual. Children are readily able to make the connection between these ideas in the plots and every day realities such as the collection and utilization of biometric data.

Parents will do their children a service if they provide them with sci fi books for kids. They will see that it will generate a love of science and technology that will extend beyond mere fiction.
