Discovering Short Stories Anecdotes Musings

By Jose Baker

While it can sometimes be difficult to find the time to listen to a specific radio show, there are stations which provide an ON DEMAND option. In one case, as public broadcast radio has so many different shows and offerings, most public radio stations provide this platform. As such, when desiring to explore short stories anecdotes musings, locating the show Selected Shorts on one of these stations can often be a good way to listen to some great short stories.

The series is recorded live on Broadway at the Porter Square Theater at Symphony Space in New York City. Like the radio program, the live show is extremely popular with almost every show sold out well in advance of show date. While considered one of the premiere series in which reading plays a part, the associated podcasts also rates highly on iTunes and public radio.

The diversity of themes is most likely one reason the show is so popular. In addition, there are often multiple stories read aloud on one program. In most cases, the themes have personal, political or professional aspects. For example, in a recent performance on the theme of women's roles, Margaret Atwood would interrupt the reader to throw in more politically correct suggestions for various wording in a short story called "There Was Once."

Some recent readers and past performers have included BD Wong, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Josh Radnor, Joan Allen, Holly Hunter, Sigourney Weaver, Blythe Danner, Anika Noni Rose, Zachary Quinto, Jane Curtain, Paul Giamatti, Michael C. Hall, Maulik Pancholy, Michael Shannon, Claire Danes, Edie Falco, Kathleen Turner, Ellen Burstyn and many others. With each show being different, even when actors or well known artists reappear on the program, it is always a new experience.

For individuals whom can travel to New York City and see a live show, it is well worth seeing. Still, just being able to listen to different episodes live and on demand can provide hours of entertainment and enjoyment whether day or night. As such, downloading the KERA or other public broadcasting app so that shows can be listened to on an On Demand basis is often a great way to get started on an interesting and unique listening journey.

While some shorts work well over the radio waves, others need a larger platform. For example, stories which take longer than thirty to sixty minutes though are still shorter than most first run films are often better on film. For, when a story is that long, it can often be difficult for audiences to stay connected on a listening only basis.

Independent filmmakers also like to make short films to submit to various contests and festivals around the world. In doing so, the film gets to more audiences, especially when the filmmaker can submit to multiple locations. For, whether a short story, book of short stories or film, each story needs the right audience.

Whether listening to stories over the air waves, watching on film or involved in the creation of a film, individuals can often have an enjoyable and rewarding experience. If interested in listening to Selected Shorts, there is often a weekly broadcast in different areas. Whereas, if looking to watch pre-recorded shows, ON DEMAND listings can be found on the KERA and other public broadcasting network's websites.
