Dealing With Domestic Abuse Stories

By Maryanne Goff

If you work in a field where you offer guidance, counseling, and advice to people who have domestic abuse stories to tell, make sure that you know some really important pointers on how the task is supposed to get done. This is a very sensitive field that you are working in. So, making sure that you know exactly how to better handle the experiences of these people matters a lot.

It always matters a lot that you know exactly what it is that you have to do to better assist and support them. Remember that what they had to go through is not really something that they may be that willing to tell you or the other people around them. Many with these experiences would prefer keeping things to themselves. So, having a really good notion on how to handle them is essential.

Understand that a lot of these people tend to have a hard time coming forward and owning up tot he experience they had. This is not something pleasant that they are about to tell you. This is something that many would rater keep buried inside them. But for them to heal, these experiences have to be laid out in the open. So, make sure that you will be there to listen.

Lend to them your ears. They need understanding. They need acceptance. More than anything they want somebody who can listen to them and lend them an understanding ear. Many people who have gone through these ordeals then have actually expressed how appreciative they often are to have people who genuinely want to listen to what they have to say.

Do not judge. It is not for you to say that they were the ones at fault or not. It is not for you to say if they were the ones who initiated what had happened to them. What matters now is that these things have passed and they are on their way to recovery. Your goal here is to help them get back on track again. Always remember that.

Assure them that they will heal in time. Explain too, that there is no guarantee that they will heal fast. After al, things would have to depend on the and their very own mechanism to cope through traumatic experiences like these. Use this chance to make sure that you will let them feel that they earn this chance and that they deserve to be back on their feet once again.

Encourage them too. More than anyone else, these are people who would need as much egging on from you. They have fallen hard. They may even feel very ashamed of themselves for what had happened. It is common for people with these experiences to blame themselves on what transpired. So, make sure that you tell them that life never stopped because they fell. Tell them this is their new start.

Make sure that you will tell these people with domestic abuse stories to go join support groups too. Somehow, many have found easier. Faster healing when they are with people who had to go through the same experiences as them. These people understand them and hat they had to go through a lot better. So, it is easier for them to be themselves when with such a group.
